Why low pressure, not a pressure washer
A pressure washer knocks the granules off shingles. A low-pressure roof wash kills the algae and leaves the shingles in place.
The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says never to use a pressure washer on an asphalt shingle roof. It recommends a bleach and water solution, sprayed on gently and rinsed off with low pressure. My roof mix is bleach-based (sodium hypochlorite). My pressure never goes past the gentle flow of an average garden hose.

Common questions
What are the black streaks on my roof?
Algae. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) says the most common kind is Gloeocapsa magma. It’s often mistaken for mildew or dirt. It spreads from roof to roof on the wind, which is why whole neighborhoods get it.
Is roof washing safe for my roof?
Yes. I use low pressure, never a pressure washer. It never goes past the gentle flow of an average garden hose. It’s safe for asphalt shingle, concrete and clay tile, and metal roofs.
Why not just pressure wash it?
ARMA says never to use a pressure washer on an asphalt shingle roof. It knocks the granules loose and will very likely make the roof fail early.
Will the streaks come back?
They can. ARMA says roof cleaning is temporary and the algae may come back. Trimming branches back so more sun reaches the roof helps. If you’re replacing the roof, ask about algae-resistant shingles.
Is it safe for my plants and pets?
Yes. The plants under your roofline get soaked before I start and rinsed again after, and I neutralize if needed. Keep your pets indoors until the roof is finished.
How do I get ready?
Shut your windows and doors, and move anything you want kept dry away from the edge of the house, since rinse water runs off the roof. That way I don’t have to handle your belongings, and nothing gets broken.
Should I clean my roof myself?
ARMA warns that a roof gets slippery during cleaning. It recommends that only trained professionals work on a roof.
